"Gossip" explores the social dynamics of rumor and speculation, staging figures from different social classes caught in a moment of ambiguous interaction. The composition does not define the content of their exchange, but deliberately leaves it open

What they are talking about is never specified: it is left to the viewer to project meaning onto the scene, or to the “painter” to subtly suggest it through artistic interpretation
